In case it passed you by, EA kicked off last month in spectacularly poor fashion when they managed to not only offend a huge number of gamers, but even a bunch of game devs, all with one bad tweet. Honestly, it was almost impressive.
The tweet in question attempted to jump on a popular trend, where someone rates another person as a 10 (out of 10), but then state a flaw that would affect their ‘score’. In EA’s instance, they wrote: “They’re a 10 but they only like playing single-player games.” With a ratio of around 2000 retweets to 17k quote tweets (at the time of writing), yeah, it clearly didn’t go down very well.

Ironically though, as reported by ComicBook, EA’s CEO, Andrew Wilson, has recently been discussing the importance of single player games, so maybe we’re all still 10s after all. This apparently took place during an earnings call earlier this week.

“As we think about single-player games, we think it's a really, really important part of the overall portfolio that we deliver in the fulfilment of those core motivations,” Wilson said. “The way we will plan for it all the time is really just looking at our community, and looking at how they're spending their time, and looking at where motivations may or may not be fulfilled. And we’ll look to supplement that with the addition of new online games, new multiplayer games, and new single-player games.”
So, that’s quite the change of heart. I mean, really, it’s far more likely that the tweet was a bad attempt at a joke in the first place rather than the company’s actual feelings about single player games, but it sure was a weird one to throw out there, especially with the likes of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor on the horizon, which, of course, is a single player game. Make it make sense, EA.
