Elden Ring fans cautiously optimistic following big reveal

FromSoftware still hasn’t lifted the lid on Shadow of the Erdtree, Elden Ring’s upcoming and long-awaited expansion.

We’re quickly approaching two years to the day since Elden Ring was released. It proved to be both a commercial and critical success, going on to nab Game of the Year at The Game Awards. One year later, in February of 2023, fans were treated to the announcement of Shadow of the Erdtree. It was somewhat of an unconventional and vague reveal. FromSoftware dropped a piece of art online, confirmed the title, and then skipped off into the sunset - and there have been no updates since. Assumedly, the expansion will feature Miquella and Torrent based on the art, but fans are desperate for more, whether that be a trailer, a release date, or even a shadow drop.

Originally, fans were convinced that a shadow drop might be coming. While we’re approaching the two year anniversary of Elden Ring, it’s also been one year since Shadow of the Erdtree was announced. With that in mind, February is quite a prosperous month for Elden Ring fans. Add in the fact that two merch collabs were announced to drop this month, with one teasing Shadow of the Erdtree, and the shadow drop theory became a convincing one.

That theory gained more traction when Elden Ring’s files were updated on Steam … only to be dashed days later when Kadokawa, FromSoftware’s parent company, released an earnings report that simply read, “We are currently working hard on the development of DLC for Elden Ring but we have not announced a release date at this time,” which doesn’t exactly fill you with hope that the expansion is ready to drop.

Bandai Namco then also published rather underwhelming financial projections. It’s been a rollercoaster of ups and downs, but things are on the rise again. It’s been revealed that FromSoftware became the sole owner of the Elden Ring IP on 24 April 202s after buying out Bandai Namco’s share which means, yes, Shadow of the Erdtree wouldn’t then factor into Bandai’s revenue expectations if it’s to be self-published. Again, it’s still not confirmation that the expansion is going to drop imminently, but it remains a possibility once more. Come on FromSoftware, put us out of our misery.
