Esports caster Daniel 'DC' Coke dead at 34

Esports caster and former Super Smash Bros. pro Daniel ‘DC’ Coke has died at the age of 34 following struggles with depression and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), ending his own life.

As reported by Dexerto, the news was confirmed on DC’s Twitter page on 13 May. In 2016 and 2017, the esports professional competed in a number of Wii U Super Smash Bros. tournaments. He would later commentate such events, alongside those for similar fighting games.

Announcing the tragic news, the tweet read, “Hey all, we regret to inform you that Daniel ‘DC’ Coke is no longer with us. For a long time, DC struggled in silence with depression and illness. He did not have the heart to fight those battles any longer and has chosen to end his life.”

DC will be greatly missed - and it’s clear to see how the esports caster touched the lives of so many. Twitter user VikkiKitty wrote, “DC, you’re the reason why I ever took a shot at commentary. You called me into the stream room at Versus and asked me to cast top eight with you for my first time. I had the time of my life and discovered something that I actually enjoyed, thanks to you. I’ll miss you, Rest In Peace.”

Thank you,” while Kuro_Ken_Chan added, “It was an absolute honor to work with you. Keeping that energetic commentary while ensuring I was comfortable commentating alongside you as a junior.
