Facebook Just Learned There's Already A Company Called Meta - And It Wants Zuckerberg's Money

This is so meta

You’d think a company on the scale of Facebook would have done its research when coming up with a new name, but apparently not.

Last week, the social media giant confirmed that it would be rebranding, and shall henceforth be known as Meta. The name change is ostensibly to reflect the company’s move towards creating a virtual reality “metaverse”, but it’s clear it also wants to escape the negative connotations of the Facebook name.

Unfortunately, it turns out there’s already a PC company called Meta, and it’s none too pleased about Facebook’s new name.

TMZ reports that another company already filed the Meta name back in August: Meta PC. It’s a company that sells all manner of computer based hardware and software. Founders Joe Darger and Zack Shutt said the company has been operating for over a year at this point, but only recently filed a trademark for the “Meta” brand.

It’s important to note, however, that Meta PC’s trademark has yet to be granted. This means it’s not a given that it will get the name instead of Facebook. Any reasonable person would assume whoever got to it first could have it, of course, but that’s not really how America has ever worked. See: the literal origin of America.

Darger and Shutt have said that it’ll let the trademark dispute go if Zuckerburg coughs up at least $20 million. To be honest, I think he could probably afford that easily enough.
