A new world

I miss Fallout. Sure, Fallout 76 offers a different kind of multiplayer action, and Fallout Shelter is good fun, but when you're playing a proper, single-player Fallout RPG? Nothing else compares.

Of course, we have a long old wait until Fallout 5, which remains nary a glint in Todd Howard's eye while Bethesda puts its efforts into improving Starfield and launching The Elder Scrolls VI. Heck, I'd be surprised if Fallout 5 even arrived this gen, given all the talk of next-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles recently.

Well, we have some good news and bad news for you. The good news is that there are tons of total conversion mods for Fallout 4, many of them so ambitious they might as well be Fallout 5. The bad news is that the biggest and best among them don't actually have release dates.

Take Fallout: Cascadia, a hugely ambitious piece of work that uses Fallout 4's engine and creates an entirely new adventure set in post-war Seattle. The team of modders promises new weapons, armour, stories to discover, and characters to meet. As if that wasn't enough, the open-world itself is "almost twice the size of Fallout 4".

With so much being promised, it's perhaps not surprising that the team of volunteers can't give us a release date. However, we do know that when the mod launches, it will be completely free to download and keep. What did we do to deserve modders?

"Fallout: Cascadia is developed entirely by volunteers, some coming from the game development industry, some new to the field and some who are just hobbyists - no matter your background, we’re always looking for more talented developers. Fallout: Cascadia will be forever free to enjoy," reads a post on the mod's website.

The only question now: will Fallout: Cascadia arrive before Fallout 5? We'll have to wait and see.
