Gamers watched over 1 billion hours of GTA 5 gameplay on Twitch last year

If you’ve been on social media in the past few days, chances are you’ve seen a gazillion wrap-ups - whether it’s people writing about or posting reels of their 2022 highlights. From boujee holidays to fun trips with friends, you know the kind of post I’m talking about and while it’s nice to look at a highlight reel, they do omit all the time we spend at home doing, well, not a lot.

If you’re on this website, chances are that’s because you enjoy gaming - and those of us who enjoy gaming spend many, many hours glued to our consoles. In fact, those of you who enjoy Grand Theft Auto V have taken that sentiment to new heights. Prepare yourselves, this is dizzying. Over one billion hours of GTA 5 gameplay was watched on Twitch in 2022 which, I don’t need to say, is absolutely wild.

As reported by Dexerto, data provider SullyGnome has unveiled that fans enjoyed over 1,336,292,674 hours worth of GTA V related content on Twitch in 2022. This means that GTA V retains its spot as the second most-watched game on the platform. First place is actually awarded to League of Legends, which raked in 1,499,478,263 hours watched. In descending order, Valorant, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Apex Legends, Fortnite, Minecraft, Dota 2, Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0, and World of Warcraft rounded out the top 10.

It’s been a big year for the Grand Theft Auto franchise, but that certainly wasn’t Rockstar’s intention. Last year, the studio was subject to a major cyber attack during which over an hours’ worth of GTA VI development footage was leaked online alongside screenshots and source code. A UK-based teenager was subsequently arrested, pleading “not guilty” in court. According to Rockstar, the leak will not impact GTA VI’s development schedule. Hopefully 2023 will bring us an official reveal.
