The wonders of sound design never ceases to amaze me, whether its Massive sending people to Chernobyl to record the sounds of silence for The Division 2 or, in a more lowkey effort, 343 Industries using a pug to make alien sounds for the upcoming Halo Infinite.
The studio making the new Halo game has brought an adorable pug called Gyoza into its recording studio to make huffing and puffing noises for its aliens. You can see a video of the actor hard at work on the studio's Instagram or embedded below:
While it's hard to tear yourself away from the adorable actor, try listening with your eyes closed to hear just how bestial the grunts and snuffles are. It's a surprisingly aggressive and large noise for such a small dog.
The question is, what aliens will Gyoza be voicing? My mind went straight to Halo's grunts but considering they talk, such animalistic noises may not be appropriate. Maybe they're for something a little dimmer, but more dangerous?
Alternatively, perhaps they'll be used to form the base noises for some kind of animal companion. It would be pretty awesome if the Master Chief is joined by a loyal war hound in the upcoming game.
If you're a pug owner, this role of alien beast may not be so surprising. The little dogs do seem almost un-doglike in their lack of grace. Take into account their squashed snout, curly tail, and waddling walk and they don't seem entirely of this word. Like a cute little fluffy alien.
We still know very little about Halo Infinite. It's coming to the next generation of Xbox, the Project Scarlett device, and the Master Chief is returning. It will also feature a single player campaign, which wasn't entirely clear from its initial reveal, but a later released trailer confirmed. This pug video is in many ways one of the best insights we've had into the next full-blooded Halo release.
