Animated Mortal Kombat Movie 'Scorpion's Revenge' Coming Later This Year

There will be blood.

You wait years for a Mortal Kombat movie, and then two show up at once. Warner Bros. Animation is currently working on a new, animated feature film based on the brutal fighting series called Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge. This, to be clear, is in addition to the live-action Mortal Kombat reboot, which is hitting cinemas on January 15th, 2021.

The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Scorpion's Revenge is expected to debut in the first half of 2020, though an exact date has yet to be decided. The animated flick will feature Community's Joel McHale as Johnny Cage, while Dexter star Jennifer Carpenter is set to voice Sonya Blade.

The cast also features Jordan Rodrigues as Liu Kang, Patrick Seitz as Scorpion and Hanzo Hasashi, and Steve Blum as Sub-Zero. Artt Butler will be voicing Shang Tsung, while Darin De Paul plays Quan Chi, Robin Atkin Downes features as Kano, and David B. Mitchell as Raiden.

Rounding out the impressive lineup is Ike Amadi as Jax Briggs, Kevin Michael Richardson as Goro, Grey Griffin as Kitana and Satoshi Hasashi, and Fred Tatasciore as Demon Torturer.

Scorpion's Revenge is being directed by Ethan Spaulding, who has experience in helming animated features from Warner Bros. Previous credits include WB animations based on DC properties, including Batman: Assault on Arkham, and Justice League: Throne of Atlantis. Both of which are worth a look, by the way. I'm not saying they're perfect, but they're a fun enough time.

Like Assault on Arkham and Justice League: Throne of Atlantis, I suspect that Scorpion's Revenge will be a straight-to-DVD/streaming service kind of deal, with maybe a one or two screenings announced closer to the game. Either way, it should be enough to keep Mortal Kombat fans happy while they wait for the live-action movie.

Last we heard, the live-action adaptation had started production towards the end of last year, after assembling a pretty damn impressive cast. Actor and martial artist Joe Taslim (The Raid), will be playing the antihero Sub-Zero. Ludi Lin (Power Rangers, Black Mirror) is Shaolin monk Liu Kang. Supergirl actor Mehcad Brooks has been cast as Jax, while Tadanobu Asano (Thor) is apparently in talks to play Raiden.

We also know that Chin Han (The Dark Knight) will be playing the evil warlock Shang Tsung, while Hiroyuki Sanada (Westworld, Life) will be playing Scorpion. So yeah... this might be the feature directorial debut of Simon McQuoid, but he's managed to assemble one hell of a cast.

I'd like to say I'm quietly confident, but Assassin's Creed had a great cast and director too, and that ended up being really, really dull. We'll have to wait and see. The animated flick, I suspect, will be a little easier to get right. They can certainly go a lot heavier when it comes blood, guts, and fatalities, right?
