Warner Bros. Montreal has officially unveiled Batman: Gotham Knights. After a week of clues and countdowns, the long-rumoured superhero title was shown off at the DC Fandome event with an impressive debut trailer, which confirms that the game stars Batman's sidekicks stepping in after the sudden death of Bruce Wayne, AKA Batman.

Take a look at the trailer for yourself below. Players will be able to play as Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, and Red Hood, each with their own unique abilities and skills as they explore an open world Gotham City that supports single player and co-op.

"Batman is dead," reads the trailer description. "It is now up to the Batman Family - Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood and Robin - to protect Gotham City, bring hope to its citizens, discipline to its cops, and fear to its criminals. You must evolve into the new Dark Knight and save Gotham from chaos."

Gotham Knights is the first new Batman game since Rocksteady released Arkham Knight back in 2015, and WB. Montreal's first game starring the Dark Knight since 2013's Arkham Origins. It's not entirely clear whether or not the new entry is related to the Arkham universe, or if it's a completely fresh take on the character. It's worth noting that the death of Bruce Wayne does seem to tie into the ending of Arkham Knight, so this could be a spiritual sequel even if it's not a canonical one.

While the trailer was fairly light on gameplay details, recent reports suggest that Gotham Knights will involve multiple factions that are somehow linked to a Nemesis system - not unlike the one seen in Shadow Of Mordor. This is certainly something that the trailer hints at briefly, but we'll have to wait to learn more about exactly how it all works.

The very end of the trailer also confirms the rumours that the villainous Court Of Owls will be the game's primary villains, so look forward to tangling with the ancient criminal empire.

The upcoming Bat-adventure isn't the only new game we can expect to see from the DC Fandome event though. At 1am on the 23rd (here in the UK), Arkham Asylum developer Rocksteady Games will share a first look at their new game - the brilliantly titled Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League.
