Chris Evans has reportedly been in talks with Marvel to reprise his role as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

According to a new report from Deadline, Evans is poised to return to the role as part of a future MCU project - though sources say it probably won't be for his own film. The more likely scenario is that Evans is coming back as a guest star in another superhero's movie, like Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark in Spider-Man: Homecoming, or Benedict Cumberpatch's Doctor Strange in Thor: Ragnarok.

Deadline stresses that the deal isn't closed yet, but that it's looking like it could go through. Evans explained in May last year that he'd be open to returning to the role, but has publicly stated that Marvel did a "nice job letting him complete his journey" in Avengers: Endgame. Deadline claims that Evans has started to come around to the idea in recent months since Marvel first floated the idea.

Evans has since responded to these reports on Twitter claiming that it's "news to me". This wouldn't be the first time an actor has denied or playfully referenced reports of a return to a certain role or project, of course. It was only recently that the news of Mads Mikkelsen taking over from Johnny Depp as Grindelwald in future Fantastic Beasts films turned out to be true, just months after the actor claimed he wasn't aware of the rumours.

As for how Evans could return as Cap? Well, there are certainly plenty of ways. Endgame saw the star-spangled Avenger head back in time to return the stolen Infinity Stones to their rightful homes before popping back to the 1940s to live out his life with Peggy Carter. The last we saw him was as an old man who'd lived a full life, handing over the iconic shield to Sam Wilson.

Marvel could have this older version of Cap return in a future MCU film, of course, but if they wanted a younger Steve Rogers again there are ways they could go. The easiest option would be to have young Cap appear in a film set before Endgame, but the Marvel universe is one of magic and science and alien wonders and alternate realities. If they really wanted to somehow bring back a younger Steve Rogers, they could do so easily.

For now take these reports with a pinch of salt. There are also plenty of upcoming Marvel TV shows and films to get through over the next year or so before we worry about Cap returning, so why not read up on those here?
