It would seem that Grand Theft Auto Online did not forget about Dre. The online game's massive Cayo Perico heist update went live recently, and players have already discovered that it features an unexpected cameo from none other than iconic rapper and producer Dr. Dre, appearing alongside longtime Rockstar collaborator DJ Pooh and record exec Jimmy Iovine.
Longtime GTA fans will of course know that DJ Pooh - AKA Mark Jordan - has worked with Rockstar for years, serving as a writer and co-producer on Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. He also came back as a consultant and writer for GTA V and its popular online mode, so it's perhaps not too surprising to see him in the mix. Dr. Dre though? Blimey. That's a cameo.
The existence of the good Dr. in GTA Online was first brought to our attention thanks to a tweet from DJ Pooh himself, who shared a screenshot of his in-game character stood with Dre and Iovine.
If you want to check out Dre's cameo for yourself, you can find a video of it right here. His all-too brief appearance sees him getting out of a car at the airport with Iovine after your arrival on the fictional resort of Cayo Perico for the DLC shenanigans. Aside from a few quick gags, there isn't much more to it than that - but it's still kind of surreal to see Dre as himself in GTA Online. Then again, given the massive popularity of the game, I'd imagine Rockstar could probably get whoever they wanted to show up in it at this point.
"It's time to raise the stakes higher than ever before," Rockstar said of the Cayo Perica update last month. "You've broken a convicted spy out of Bolingbroke Penitentiary. You've saved the world from an egomaniacal tech billionaire. And you've beaten the odds to drain a casino of its cash. This time, you're taking on an entire island."
"The Cayo Perico Heist is the biggest GTA Online adventure ever, introducing an all-new exotic Heist location, with a brand-new approach to Heist design that features the ability to play everything solo or with up to three other players. Plus you can acquire new vehicles and tactical weapons, experience new social spaces to dance and party in with your friends, and new world-class guest DJs, and listen to new radio stations with over 100 new songs. Oh, and a very large, very versatile, and very heavily armed submarine HQ with plenty of other surprises."
Hopefully Dre pops up a few more times as players dive deeper into the Cayo Perica content - especially since he seems to be one of the many artists flown in to perform for the in-game event. I guess Rockstar really wasn't kidding when it said this was GTA Online's biggest update ever, since it has the cameos to match.
