Academy Award-nominated actor Elliot Page has taken to social media to announce that he is transgender. In a heartfelt statement posted to Twitter and Instagram, the star of Beyond: Two Souls, The Umbrella Academy, and Juno confirmed that they identify as trans and uses he/they pronouns.

"I feel overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me along this journey," Page wrote. "I can't begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self."

"I also ask for patience," the actor added. "My joy is real, but it is also fragile. The truth is, despite feeling profoundly happy right now and knowing how much privilege I carry, I am also scared.

"The statistics are staggering. The discrimination towards trans people is rife, insidious and cruel, resulting in horrific consequences. In 2020 alone it has been reported that at least 40 transgender people have been murdered, the majority of which were Black and Latinx trans women. Enough is enough. You aren't being 'cancelled,' you are hurting people. I am one of those people and we won't be silent in the face of your attacks."

Page's statement has been met with an outpouring of support from colleagues, castmates, and fans alike. Netflix, who confirmed that Page will continue to play Vanya Hargreeves in season three of The Umbrella Academy, wrote that they were "so proud" of their superhero. Avengers star Mark Ruffalo added that we're lucky to have public figures like Page, and thanked him for speaking out. Page's X-Men co-star Patrick Stewart also expressed his love and admiration and basically I'm not crying you are, okay?

"I love that I am trans," Page finished his statement by saying. "And I love that I am queer. And the more I hold myself close and fully embrace who I am, the more I dream, the more my heart grows and the more I thrive."
