The question of Grand Theft Auto VI's release date has once again surfaced after a reliable movie leaker and insider suggested that the long-awaited Rockstar title was originally scheduled for a 2023 launch.

Twitter user ViewerAnon, a leaker with a solid track record of movie scoops, recently shot down fan hopes that GTA VI could be releasing anytime soon. Responding to the news that Rockstar Games is currently hiring testers, they noted this is very, very unlikely to have anything to do with whether or not GTA VI is ready. They explained that companies test games for years and, last they heard, Rockstar had set an internal release date of 2023 for the upcoming game.

Take a look at our tourism video for GTA V's Los Santos below!

"They're not going to announce GTA VI before GTA V's next-gen upgrade is released," ViewerAnon added in a follow-up tweet. "Red Dead Redemption II was announced one year before its original release date. Expect GTA VI to be announced late next year if COVID hasn't set it back."

On the one hand, 2023 is only two and a half years away, which isn't nearly as long as some of us might have expected to wait for GTA VI... although GTA V will be ten years old by then. On the other hand, there are some important caveats to consider before you get too excited about a 2023 release date.

For one thing, ViewerAnon's claim is unverified and should definitely be taken with the usual pinch of salt we bring to such rumours. Assuming their sources are accurate and Rockstar Games had internally marked GTA VI for 2023 at some stage, there's every chance that could have changed. Internal release dates are pushed around all the time - that's a big part of the reason they're internal and not public. The scope of the project, the pandemic, and a dozen other factors could have contributed to the game getting pushed back a few years.

With that said, this isn't the first time we've heard rumblings of a 2023 release window. Last year industry analysts pointed to a financial report that suggested Rockstar would be gearing up to market Grand Theft Auto VI between April 2023 and March 2024. It's not impossible then, but remain patient and watch this space.
