Grand Theft Auto V's success continues to surge even in the seven years that have passed since its release, and it has now sold 135 million copies.

It's a staggering statistic, and it was shared in publisher Take-Two Interactive's most recent financial report. It accrued $841 million in net revenue in the second quarter of 2020, which is a decrease of $17 million compared to the second quarter of 2019. However, recurrent consumer spending in Q2 2020 has risen from 37% of the total revenue to 59% of the total revenue. "Recurrent consumer spending" is a roundabout word for the profit gained from in-game transactions and post-launch DLC, and Take-Two has a number of golden geese in this here paddock. Grand Theft Auto Online, NBA 2K20, Red Dead Online, and Borderlands 3 are raking in the cash, to the surprise of no one in the slightest.

It also announced that sales of Grand Theft Auto V have soared to 135 million copies since 2013, with 15 million more sales secured from February 2020 to November 2020. "With more people staying at home, we have experienced, and are continuing to experience, heightened levels of engagement and net bookings growth-to-date," said the company in the report. "The full extent of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic to our business, operations, and financial results will depend on numerous evolving factors that we are not able to predict."

Of course, Grand Theft Auto V is in development for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, and is slated to release in late 2021. The next-generation version of the game will arrive with numerous technical enhancements and performance upgrades to make the most of the powerful processing abilities of the consoles.

"Grand Theft Auto V for PlayStation 5 will feature a range of technical improvements, visual upgrades, and performance enhancements to take full advantage of the console's powerful new hardware, making the game more beautiful and more responsive than ever," said developer Rockstar Games in the announcement. In addition, those who hold off purchasing Grand Theft Auto V right now and wait for the next-gen version will get Grand Theft Auto Online for free. Neato.

Rockstar Games is busy beavering away on the next entry to the series, which is allegedly taking place in a "moderately sized" world, in comparison to the sprawling streets of Los Santos and the vast plains of the Wild West. It'll likely be a while before we see Grand Theft Auto VI, but, this impressive mod pastes in the city of Chicago for players to explore. As a passion project between two developers, the level of detail is astounding, and their Patreon allows early access to map builds. Exciting stuff.
