Yesterday (10 April) was the Kingdom Hearts 20th anniversary celebration and Square Enix thoroughly spoiled us by announcing that Kingdom Hearts 4 is in the works.

The series of Kingdom Hearts games is set in the mysterious space where Final Fantasy and Disney's wealth of characters collide and intertwine. As Disney has expanded its empire, so have the number of characters and settings possible within the franchise. The inclusion of Halloween Town from The Nightmare Before Christmas felt particularly adventurous in the first Kingdom Hearts game. However, by the second we already had a world based on the Pirates Of The Caribbean films, and the third was loaded with Pixar worlds, from Toy Story to Monsters Inc.

Kingdom Hearts 3 began development in 2005, shortly prior to Disney's purchase of Pixar. So while it may not seem that a lot has changed since its release in 2019, we are actually looking at around 15 years of newly acquired Disney characters as opposed to three. Anything acquired in this time could make an appearance in the next entry in the series.

If you missed out on the announcement then you can catch up by watching the trailer below.

Fans have been scouring the trailer, hungry to know what fresh worlds could be included. While a lot of it plays out mostly in a world which looks very much like modern day downtown Tokyo, there are glimpses of other scenery. We see a Kingdom Hearts style chess set, and a grassy forest world.

Twitter detectives have been on the case, and believe this grassy world to be the forest moon of Endor from the Star Wars universe. It must be said the grassy scenery and strange plants look much like those from the home of the Ewoks. People have also noticed something which looks suspiciously like the foot of an AT-ST, which can be seen in Return Of The Jedi in the battle for Endor.

Star Wars is one of Disney's biggest properties, and since the announcement people have been guessing that something distinctly Star Wars would make an appearance. The other worlds are so far uncertain, but it is interesting that Disney now also owns Marvel
