For years people have been saying Hideo Kojima, creator of the Metal Gear games and Death Stranding, should just make a movie. His games frequently feature extravagant, lengthy cutscenes, with Metal Gear Solid 4 famously ending on a 90-minute cinematic. Well, he might finally be making one.
Speaking to BBC's Newsbeat (via IGN), Kojima said that "In the future, Kojima Productions will start making films. If you can do one thing well, then you can do everything well." While I'm not sure I agree with that logic - I make a great lasagne but I wouldn't say I'm up to snuff as a rally driver - he does have the cinema contacts to lean on.

Kojima Productions' first game, Death Stranding, is due to launch on PlayStation on November 8 - and it's coming to PC next year. The game features a star-studded cast, with actors like Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen, but also a number of directors. The Shape Of Water director Guillermo del Toro and Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn both lend their likenesses to major characters in the game, and even Shaun Of The Dead's director Edgar Wright and Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts play minor roles. The Vogt-Roberts cameo is particularly touching, as he is currently working on a Metal Gear Solid film.
Kojima doesn't make clear if he plans to write or direct these films, or whether Kojima Productions would play the role of a production company on projects.
For Kojima's next project, he plans something even more ambitious than Death Stranding, a game that is a response to the modern divisive politics or Trump and Brexit. Kojima tells the BBC that he's interested by the upcoming overlap of film, television, and games thanks to streaming technology, and he's "very interested in the new format of game that will appear on there and that's what I want to take on".
