Marvel Entertainment has cast the character of Spider-Woman (also known as Jessica Drew) in the next Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse movie - and fans are over the moon with the choice.

If you've not seen Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, then get out of here. I mean it. Get out. Watch it on Netflix. Catch you in two hours. You won't regret it. With a sumptuous visual style mixing computer animation and hand-drawn comic book techniques, the story centres on Miles Morales. His journey from a geeky yet dissatisfied teen into the saviour of New York City from an evil plot that would have literally sent the multiverse through a wood chipper is simultaneously heartwarming and hilarious. As it is Sony's movie, it's not officially in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it won over countless fans of the comic book character and refreshed the artistic and narrative dimensions of the genre. In fact, some of this movie's twists and turns are seemingly being incorporated into Spider-Man: No Way Home. Gee, Bill! How come your mum lets you add TWO previous Spideys to your movie?

Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is stacked to the brim with sequels and shiny new movies and shows to sink our teeth into. Take a look at a sizzle reel of all of these below.

Actress, writer and producer Issa Rae has been cast in the role of Spider-Woman in the second Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse movie, as per the report from The Hollywood Reporter. If her name is ringing a bell, she started her career with the web series Awkward Black Girl in 2011. Following the stratospheric success of the show, HBO picked up the pilot for her next project, the TV series Insecure. Rae got nominated for two Golden Globes for the show two years in a row and a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress for her role as Issa Dee. Expectedly, fans of her work and of the movie are especially excited to hear the news.

"I automatically smiled reading this headline! Congrats to Issa!" said 2020Bun on Reddit. "Didn't even know I needed this, but now it's everything I ever wanted," added @BrysenSei on Twitter. "Issa Rae is just gonna be a phenomenal Spider-Woman just like Hailee Steinfield was a phenomenal Spider-Gwen in the first movie! She's fantastic in Insecure & she's great at balancing humor with serious topics!" enthused @supermangeek101. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 is set to release on October 7th, 2022.
