One of the finest Star Wars video games ever made is finally coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Aspyr's excellent tactical shooter Star Wars: Republic Commando makes its way to Sony's console on April 6, complete with updated controls and trophies to hunt.

Released way back in 2005, Republic Commando was a tactical first-person shooter that told the tale of a group of elite clone commandos as they fought battles set during the time between Episode II and Episode III. Combining fast-paced FPS action with a thoughtful tactical twist, it was - and still is - one of the more unique Star Wars out there. A sequel was in development at one point, but ultimately fell apart. Here's hoping this surprise PS4 port gets the ball rolling on a sequel again!

"Republic Commando is a fan favorite, and nobody knows that better than Aspyr," writes Aspyr marketing specialist Mallie Rust for the PlayStation Blog. "Trust me, we've read many, many, many tweets and comments requesting it. We're happy to say that your requests will finally be answered.

"You'll play as Delta Squad leader RC-1138, AKA Delta Three-Eight, AKA "Boss," but no clone is alone. The squad is your weapon, especially when you call the shots with maneuvers. Sure, your squadmates can maintain formation and execute tactics on their own, but the key to success is directing your squad to victory.

"These maneuvers include commands to perform special tasks like demolitions or door breaches, search and destroy commands, and calls for your squad to form-up behind you. Your squad can even revive you when you fall in battle!"

Now, c'mon, someone make a new Republic Commando

Aspyr has also promised to faithfully recreate the original Star Wars: Republic Commando feel with a few modern twists, admitting that what worked in 2005 doesn't translate perfectly to modern hardware. As such, we can expect some updated controls for the DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers, although exactly how much has been tweaked remains to be seen.

No doubt Aspyr and PlayStation will share more with us closer to April 6. For now, let's just get ready to jump into Republic Commando and help show a whole new generation one of the greats.
