Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake on PC and PlayStation 5 is never coming out, an insider warns.
Developed by BioWare, when Knights of the Old Republic was first released for PC and the original Xbox in 2003, it showed the gaming world how Star Wars RPGs should be done.
Set roughly 4,000 years prior to the rise of the Galactic Empire, Knights of the Old Republic told the tale of an unlikely hero that looks to put an end to the Sith’s reign of tyranny over the galaxy. Well, at least for some fans. Ultimately, the story was shaped by you as a result of your dialogue choices and actions.
Depending on the choices that you make, you could either lean into the Light Side of the Force or the Dark Side. What’s more, not only will the beats of the story change including how the game ends, but so too would your facial features and powers that you could unlock and level up. It’s fair to say that after two decades since its initial release, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was ahead of its time.

Announced during a PlayStation Showcase event in September 2021, the remake should have been joyous news for fans and at the time, it most certainly was. However, since that time we’ve heard a number of concerning stories that might imply that the remake has entered the dreaded developmental hell.
In July 2022, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reported that the remake had been delayed indefinitely, due to an underwhelming demo showcased to both Sony and Lucasfilm. Then in August 2022, further reports indicated that higher-ups were so unhappy with the progress of the remake that the original developers, Aspyr, were being sacked from the project and a new studio would take over the reins.
Ever since those concerning reports in 2022, news has been a little quiet on the progress of the remake, which alone should be enough to worry fans. Unfortunately, this story may have taken another turn for the worse, so much so that it's rumoured the remake might not ever see the light of day.
As reported by TheGamer, Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb claimed that when asked about the status of the remake, he said that he doesn't believe the game will “ever come out”. If true, that’s not the news that fans would want to hear.

What’s more, when asked if the KOTOR remake would be released before another troubled remake, Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia, he replied: “We got Ubisoft's lineup for the next year, and [there's] no mention of Prince of Persia at all. I still think Prince of Persia comes out before KOTOR, which I don't think will ever come out."
At this time, we should take all unconfirmed rumours with a pinch of salt until proven otherwise. That being said, the reports following the announcement of the KOTOR remake have not been promising and I am a firm believer in there being no smoke without fire.
Hopefully, we’re all worrying over nothing and the KOTOR might actually release and be an absolute banger, I just wouldn't hold my breath. For now at least, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is set to release for PC and PlayStation 5.
Finally, if you’re desperate for a KOTOR fix, the two original games in the series are not only backwards compatible on modern Xbox consoles, but they’re also available on PC, Nintendo Switch as well as mobile devices.
