Last night, Sony announced a pretty promising-looking new first-person survival horror game called Abandoned for PlayStation 5. It's being developed by a little-known studio called Blue Box Game Studios, and is aiming for a real sense of realism - both in regards to the visuals and the survival elements.

In a post over on the PlayStation Blog, Blue Box Game shared some information on Abandoned, along with a shiny debut trailer. Development is at an early stage, but it certainly looks and sounds... familiar.

"The story is centered around Jason Longfield, who wakes up in a strange forest," says Blue Box. "Abandoned and not remembering how he got there, Jason soon finds out that he was kidnapped and brought there for a dark purpose. Fighting for his survival, his main goal is escape."

At this point, you're probably thinking that Abandoned is, somehow, the long-rumoured Silent Hill PlayStation 5 reboot that we've all been waiting for. I mean, it both sounds and looks a lot like a new entry in Konami's popular series, right? Don't be embarrassed if you instantly thought Silent Hill - a lot of people did.

Over on Reddit, a few threads popped up with fans speculating that Abandoned was somehow a secret Hideo Kojima project, or a new Silent Hill, or both. Given that we had no idea the P.T demo had anything to do with Silent Hill until people actually started getting to the end of it, you can totally see where these fans are coming from.

Alas, Blue Box Game Studios has nothing to do with Hideo Kojima, and Abandoned is unlikely to have anything to do with Silent Hill. Catching wind of these rumours, Blue Box issued a statement to make it clear that its new game is entirely its own.

"We received several emails regarding the Hideo Kojima rumor," the studio wrote on its website. "We have no association with Hideo Kojima nor do we claim to have any association nor was it our intention to claim such a statement. We are a small group of developers working on a passionate title we wanted to work on for a long time.

"We have been assisting other studios in the past with their projects and we wanted to work on our very first big project. While it is true that we've been working on small projects in the past, we certainly didn't use that for marketing purposes. We hope this has clarified this matter and hope to see you all in our very first gameplay reveal of Abandoned."

Disappointing? Maybe a little. But Abandoned still looks pretty damn promising, and should be one for horror fans with a PlayStation 5 to look out for when it arrives at the end of this year.
