There’s A New Console Coming And It Has A Windup Crank On The Side

Put the PlayStation 5 out of mind, there's a new upcoming console on the block. It's yellow, has a crank, and its games are a secret.

While there are ever-loudening sounds of next generation consoles, with Sony now openly talking about the next PlayStation, there's another whole new console to look forward to: Playdate. Though it's not like much else on the market. For a start, it has a crack on the side that you can use to control its games, besides that it only has two buttons and a d-pad, and, perhaps the strangest feature, the games that are on it are a secret.

Not secret like 'We'll be talking to that closer to release', even when you've bought a Playdate you won't know what games are installed on the console. Every week for 12 weeks a new game will activate on the console.

The first 12 games will come pre-loaded on the console when it launches and then you can buy into new seasons of games after that.

The team behind this oddball console are Panic, the company that published Firewatch and is currently publishing Untitled Goose Game. While most the upcoming games are secret, Panic has revealed the titles and developers of a couple. For instance, Crankin's Time Travel Adventure from Katamari Damacy's Keita Takahashi is controlled entirely by the crank. Besides that, there's title screens for games called Zipper, Executive Golf, and o360:

Putting the crank aside, Playdate has a black and white screen, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB-C, and a headphone jack. It looks pretty dinky, small enough to fit in your pocket, and I would guess that the battery life is great, considering the undemanding tech.

Playdate is due to launch in 2020 and it will cost $149.99. You can sign up for my information over at play.date, where you'll also be informed about preorders. Will you be picking up a Playdate?
