The Grand Theft Auto fanbase is in a flap, a flutter and a frenzy following a cryptic comment from Sony on its own TikTok about iconic gaming introduction songs. In short, it seems that there might be a Grand Theft Auto VI announcement on the 20th anniversary of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
Over the last few years, it feels like the Grand Theft Auto community has been following the mantra "fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on you again; fool me three times, right, no one post from this leaker again because he's pulling things out of thin air."
That was, of course, before the massive Rockstar Games security breach that leaked early gameplay footage of Grand Theft Auto VI with a male and a female protagonist and a setting in a modernised Vice City. Since that fateful day in September, fans have been cobbling together as much as they can from the files that wormed their way onto the Internet.
So what's a TikTok got to do with it? Sony's official account posted video showing "[point of view]: you load up one of the most iconic intro songs on your PS2," featuring the Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas titles. This naturally instigated much discourse over the best game songs, and one suggested that the Sony TikTok account post the starting sequence to Grand Theft Auto: Vice City next. The account then replied, "20th anniversary is coming up too" with the pair of eyes emoji.
Given that the new game is confirmed to be taking place in Vice City, gamers reckon that Sony's let the cat out of the bag here. Now, I'm not totally convinced that this is inferring that there will be a Grand Theft Auto VI reveal on the 20th anniversary of the older game. The industry offered its condolences to Rockstar Games following the fallout of the hack, and to me, I would perceive it to be in poor taste to hype up fans ahead of an announcement that the company hadn't already signposted. There's just over a week to see who's right.
