GTA 6 fans disappointed by quiet cancellations by Rockstar Games

Grand Theft Auto VI fans are somewhat disappointed that the game might be coming at the expense of several other cancelled or scaled back Rockstar Games projects.

We’re several months on from Rockstar Games’ initial reveal of GTA VI, so you can understand why fans are itching for something new. Given that the game isn’t due to launch until 2025, it’s unlikely we’ll get our first glimpse at gameplay for several months yet. In the meantime, GTA VI’s release month was hinted at in Take-Two Interactive’s latest earnings call, and then seemingly altered a few days later in what is certainly a head-scratching move. While we’re all thrilled that GTA VI is now tangibly on the way, some have pointed out that it’s not without cost.

As Reddit user GeraltofRivea3 pointed out, several other Rockstar Games projects have taken knockbacks in recent years. It was previously revealed that Red Dead Online would no longer gain major content updates, while insiders claimed that a GTA IV remaster had also been cancelled. We have since gained a Red Dead Redemption remaster, but some can’t help but wonder if that began life as a remake.

While this is all speculative, the working theory is that a game as demanding as GTA VI requires all hands on deck forcing some difficult decisions at Rockstar. “Sad. I much prefer Red Dead to GTA,” user ExtraRealNice wrote, while a more optimistic ARandomGuyThe3 said, “Why are y'all disappointed that they're making a new game instead of remaking things you already have and then selling it to you again?”

I’m certainly all for GTA VI over remasters. That being said, I think we’re all hoping to return to the Red Dead franchise one day, in whatever iteration that might be. I’m sure Rockstar Games knows what it’s doing.
