'GTA Online' Is Getting A Much Requested Expansion, Says Insider

Apparently, a big summer update is on its way to GTA Online, and it might be featuring a fan-favourite location as a new map.

Whether you like it or not, Rockstar is seemingly determined to keep GTA V and GTA Online going until the end of time. I mean, at least we know that GTA VI is actually in the works now, right? Not that it makes the wait for it any easier.

With that said, it’s probably not too surprising to hear that there’s apparently a new expansion coming to GTA Online very soon, but it’s something that fans have actually been asking for for some time - the return of Liberty City from GTA III and IV.

The new-gen ports of GTA V released earlier this month - check out the comparison of the latest release's graphics and the original's below.

As reported by ComicBook, this claim comes from Portuguese insider @Matheusbr9895_ over on Twitter: “Recent information I get from sources, there's a BIG summer update coming to GTA Online, and we'll see good connections between them... Map expansion!” they wrote (as translated by Google). They also added both a sunglasses and Statue of Liberty emoji to the end of the tweet, simply saying “Soon!”, which GTA fans quickly pieced together as a Liberty City tease.

Now, as far as leakers go, @Matheusbr9895_ has a pretty mixed record. Back in January, they claimed that the development of the new-gen ports of GTA V was “complicated”, and it was very likely that they’d be delayed to April or May. To be fair, while they didn't say that it’d definitely happen, nothing came of it.

This also isn’t the first time this year that they’ve said we’re getting a new map - previously, they didn’t give any release window or hints as to where we could be headed, so there’s a chance that they knew about Liberty City back then, too.

If Rockstar were to drop a big update sometime soon, it might help quieten down the fans who are angry about GTA+. In case you missed it, it’s a subscription service for GTA Online - for $5.99 a month, subscribers can get triple rewards on some missions, the ability to upgrade items for free, waived car meet fees, and $500,000 of in-game currency (each month). Although the majority of the players were far from happy about this, it launched yesterday, so we’ll have to wait and see how popular it actually ends up being.
