The fifth and final instalment of the Indiana Jones series is almost upon us, and legendary actor Harrison Ford gave a very tearful and heartfelt thanks to his fans during the film’s premiere at the Cannes Film Festival yesterday (18 May).
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny sees Indy take on his last outing alongside his goddaughter, Helena Shaw, who’s portrayed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (best known her role in her brilliant comedy-drama, Fleabag). Over 15 years on from the release of the previous instalment, The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, there’s some serious pressure for Indiana Jones’ swan-song to live up to the series’ legacy, and there’s no doubt that it’ll be an emotional time for longtime fans.

Obviously though, there’s no one more emotional about Ford’s departure as Indy than the actor himself. As Variety reports, the movie received a five-minute standing ovation as the credits rolled during its premiere yesterday, and as the audience shifted their attention to Ford, it was clear that the 80-year-old actor was holding back tears. Given that this is a role that he’s held for over half his life, it’s no wonder that he got choked up.
“I’m very moved by this,” Ford said during a speech. “They say when you’re about to die, you see your life flash before your eyes, and I just saw my life flash before my eyes. A great part of my life, but not all of my life. My life has been enabled by my lovely wife, who has supported my passion and my dreams, and I’m grateful.”

Speaking directly to the audience, he continued: “I love you, too. Thank you. You’ve given my life purpose and meaning, and I’m grateful for that.”
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will be releasing in cinemas on 30 June.
