Harry Potter reboot trailer confirms all new cast, seriously divides opinion

Harry Potter reboot trailer confirms all new cast, seriously divides opinion

A Harry Potter TV show is officially in the works and is set to feature a brand new cast.

The rumours were true. Harry Potter is indeed getting the reboot treatment as a brand new TV adaptation is on the way and as you might’ve guessed, it’s an announcement that’s already proved to be hugely divisive.

The Wizarding World franchise has somewhat fallen from grace in recent years. As I’m sure you’re aware, author JK Rowling has come under fire for her repeated transphobic comments, prompting many members of the original Harry Potter film cast to distance themselves from the author. Despite many fans threatening to boycott the recent Hogwarts Legacy though, the game has experienced immense commercial success, shifting 12 million copies in the first two weeks of release alone. This revived interest in the franchise led to rumours that a new TV show was cooking up, and now that project has been confirmed.

Take a look at the brand new teaser trailer for the series below.

It was suspected that a Hogwarts Legacy TV show might be in the works, before sources then said it was in fact a reboot of the original Harry Potter books. The latter has proven to be true. JK Rowling’s seven Harry Potter books will be adapted by Max (formerly HBO Max), with JK Rowling on board as an executive producer. The series is described as a “faithful adaptation” and will feature a brand new cast who, producers hope, will “lead a new generation of fandom”.

It was also teased that the TV show is a “decade-long” project so I should imagine that we’ll see at least one season dedicated to each book. This could then be a more in-depth adaptation than we’ve seen before. Still, the cast, locations, designs, and sets of the original film series have become so iconic. You do wonder if audiences are going to be able to accept a different Harry, or a different Diagon Alley - I could go on with examples.

In a release (via GameSpot), WB Discovery said, “Each season will be authentic to the original books and bring Harry Potter and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world.” Rowling added that WB Discovery had made a “commitment to preserving the integrity” of her original book series. Original film producer David Heyman is in talks to join the project too. There’s no release date planned yet, but I’m sure we’ll hear casting news over the coming months.
