HBO's The Last Of Us has put pressure on Amazon's God Of War to deliver, says director

Cory Barlog has confessed that he's feeling the pressure on Amazon's God of War TV series to deliver after watching The Last of Us.

HBO’s The Last of Us certainly isn’t the first adaptation to ‘break the video game curse’, but it has set the bar for future adaptations and, I’ll admit, I agree with the sentiment that it’s the greatest video game adaptation of all time.

There are so many gaming-related film and TV projects in the works right now. There’s the Horizon Zero Dawn series over at Netflix, the Gran Turismo film, the Ghost of Tsushima film, and Amazon’s Fallout series - and that’s just to name a few. All of these projects have been in the pipeline for quite some time but I’d imagine that The Last of Us’ quality and success has upped the pressure. In fact, Cory Balrog has admitted that’s certainly the case for the upcoming God of War TV series.

Excited for The Last of Us’ season finale? Take a look at the promo for ‘Look for the Light’ below.

Over on Twitter, a fan asked Barlog if he was enjoying the HBO series so far to which he replied, “Truly amazing, humbling and inspiring work that fills me with joy [and] happiness for all who made it - and no small amount of pressure, frustration and a wee bit of jealousy that it is SO F**KING GOOD. Seriously, what they are achieving is god damn MONUMENTAL. So proud of them.”

High praise, but Barlog’s concerns are valid too. The Last of Us is certainly going to heighten fan’s expectations when it comes to future video game adaptations. It’s already been teased that the God of War TV series will keep ‘everything that made the game great.’ It’ll adapt the Norse saga and many are hoping to see Christopher Judge return as Kratos. In fact, the actor has made it clear that there’s no one better for the role.

He’s not alone. Freya actress Danielle Busutti and Atreus actor Sunny Suljic are also hoping to reprise their roles. No casting has yet been announced though. I’m sure the teams are busy behind the scenes cooking up something good.
