Jason Momoa To Star In The 'Minecraft' Movie, For Some Reason

This was one we really didn't see coming.

There were many squares on my “unusual announcements for 2022” bingo card, but the Minecraft movie receiving an update like this one certainly wasn’t on there.

We first heard whispers of a Minecraft movie in 2014, when Markus ‘Notch’ Persson, the founder and then owner of Minecraft and studio Mojang, tweeted that a Minecraft movie was in the works with Warner Bros. Mojang was purchased the same year by Microsoft for $2.5 billion, and little has been announced since then. The only news is that there have been numerous delays, most recently due to the ongoing pandemic, and with no release date given.

If you want to see another equally cursed Minecraft crossover, then check out the Sonic The Hedgehog collaboration in the video below.

Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, a few unusual details about the production have been revealed. Firstly, Jared Hess of Napoleon Dynamite fame, has been brought on to direct, though the film is still in pre-production. It is also being produced in collaboration between Mojang Studios’ Lydia Winters and Vu Bui, alongside movie producers Roy Lee and Mary Parent, who produced the Oscars’ Best Picture nominee Dune.

The biggest surprise is that Hollywood beefcake Jason Momoa has been signed on to star in the Minecraft film. The actor is currently working with Warner Bros. for the Aquaman sequel Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom. It could be that he is taking part in the Minecraft film as part of his contract to the studio.

Video game films have made a resurgence of late. Recently released Sonic The Hedgehog 2 has quickly become one of the most popular video game adaptations of all time. Not only this, but the Uncharted movie did even better than expected at the box office despite negative reviews

Who knows, maybe the acting chops of Jason Momoa is just what are needed to bring Minecraft Steve to life?
