Joker and Harley Quinn anime officially announced

A Joker and Harley Quinn Suicide Squad anime has officially been announced.

The DC roster is packed with iconic characters. When it comes to Batman’s rogues gallery, you’re really spoilt for choice. The caped crusader has faced off against some dastardly villains over the years, but Joker and Harley Quinn almost always come out on top as the most popular.

We’ll soon be able to see the duo brought to life in the sequel to Joker, titled Joker: Folie á Deux. We’ve already had our first look at Lady Gaga in action alongside the returning Joaquin Phoenix. It’s believed that the film will be a musical, but not in the traditional sense. Make of that what you will. That’s not the project that I’m here to tell you about today though. It’s now been announced that Joker and Harley will also be getting their own anime. Ooo, indeed.

DC’s Blue Beetle will be released later this year. Take a look at the trailer below.

As reported by IGN, Joker and Harley are set to appear in Suicide Squad Isekai, a brand new original anime series from Warner Bros. Japan and WIT Studio. If you’re unfamiliar with the subgenre of isekai, it’s essentially when characters are transported to a new or unfamiliar world so we should see the Suicide Squad come up against some unusual threats. In the short trailer, we’re only offered a few glimpses of Joker and Harley causing havoc. Take a look below.

The series is not connected to James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DCU. Jujutsu Kaisen chief animation director Eri Osada is directing the project, while Tappei Najatsuki and Eiji Umehara are on writing duties. At Anime Expo, Osada revealed that Joker and Harley will lead the show, although it’ll be a new take on Joker. He explained, “Everybody has their favourite version of Joker. We ultimately decided to not copy any particular iteration and have something completely unique.”

There’s no release date at this point in time, or even a release window but we’ll certainly be keeping an eye out for future updates.
