Watching quiz shows on TV can only go one of two ways - you’re either hit with the realisation that going on one of them yourself might just be the most embarrassing moment of your life, or you’re left yelling at your screen wondering how the contestants seem completely dumbfounded by the only questions you actually know the answers to.
There’s perhaps no greater example of the latter than in one episode of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? from 1999, which saw a contestant struggle with a $500,000 question which I can pretty much guarantee anyone reading this will be able to answer instantly.

As LADbible reports, contestant Toby Moore was faced with the following question: “Which of the following characters is not considered a Pokémon?” His four options were Jigglypuff, Frodo, Squirtle and Pikachu.
That’s right, three of the most well-known Pokémon of all time and the main protagonist of The Lord of the Rings. What could possibly go wrong? Sadly for Moore, even a 50/50 lifeline (which narrowed down his choices to Frodo and Jigglypuff) couldn’t help him - he chose to walk away with the $250,000 he’d already won.

To this day, YouTube commenters are stunned that he was unable to answer the question: “This is one of the easiest f**king answers to a $500K question I've ever seen. Either this guy never had a childhood or has kids who played this. It's insane; this is so freaking easy. This is a $500 question,” one recently wrote. “Are you serious? This is like a $1,000 question. Or have your kid as a phone a friend,” commented another.
It’s worth keeping in mind however that at the time that this episode was aired, The Lord of the Rings movies didn’t yet exist - The Fellowship of the Ring didn’t come out until 2001. What’s more, Pokémon was also in its infancy - Red and Blue released in the U.S. in late 1998, so it’d not been out for that long when the episode was filmed. Even so, I imagine that the contestant is probably still kicking himself now.
