A number of Marvel Cinematic Universe TV shows, including Spider-Man: Freshman Year, might be in trouble following reports of layoffs inside one of its studios.
Spider-Man: Freshman Year is theorised to be set in a different reality where the hero isn't yet an Avenger and is grappling with his powers as well as all of the stress of being a high-schooler. Its animated style aims to "celebrate the character's early comic book roots" and while the castings for Peter Parker, May Parker, Norman Osborn, Doc Ock and Doctor Strange haven't been announced, Charlie Cox is confirmed to be reprising his role as Daredevil.

It's a promising pitch and the character of Spider-Man sees success on the silver and small screen, however, these reports are troubling. At the start of the month, a couple of Spider-Man: Freshman Year crew shared their dismay on social media that the team is already changing for the second season of the show.

Then, industry insider KC Walsh suggested that there is even more turmoil behind the scenes. "I’m concerned Marvel Animation is going to become a failed experiment," they said on 15 November, adding that "layoffs will happen" and the future of shows are solely dependent on the response to the previous seasons.
Now, a report from The Cosmic Circus reiterates that Spider-Man: Freshman Year is under a scorching level of scrutiny for its potential, but it is still premiering in 2024. Rumours of cancellation are just rumours, it continued, although it is worth crossing all of your fingers that the show doesn't meet with this fate.
