'Mass Effect 5' Is Still Years Away, Says BioWare

'Mass Effect 5' Is Still Years Away, Says BioWare

The upcoming Mass Effect game was announced back in 2020, but it's clearly quite a way off being done yet.

Last November, on N7 Day to be exact, we got a long sought-after update on the upcoming Mass Effect game, which was first announced back in 2020, and fans have been going wild about it since. Alongside a brief teaser, fans were also shown a really cool looking poster, which seems to be packed with secrets and hints about the new game.

Having been revealed for over a year though, it’d be understandable if fans were itching to see something a little more, y’know, concrete, but it seems like it’ll be a good while before we do yet. As reported by TweakTown, the game is still in the earliest stages of development, and is still being prototyped.

ICYMI... check out the teaser for Mass Effect 5 below.

Yesterday, over on the BioWare blog, the general manager of BioWare, Gary McKay, gave a few updates on some of the games the team are working on, focusing on the next Dragon Age. Before rounding off the post, he let fans know where Mass Effect 5 is at, and basically told us all not to expect anything for a while.

“Of course, we’re also working on the next Mass Effect. The team, led by Mike Gamble, is made up of a team of veteran developers as well as some new, really talented people. They are all actively prototyping new ideas and experiences,” he wrote. “AAA next-gen games take a long time to make – and we know our fans may want them sooner. But our Number One priority needs to be quality, and that simply takes time to get it right.”

Chances are, it’s going to be years until we actually get our hands on the next game, but undoubtedly it’ll be worth the wait. It’s also going to be interesting to see where the story actually goes, given that choices players made in Mass Effect 3 did influence some important outcomes, so BioWare might have to settle on a canon ending yet if they want to make a proper sequel. Sounds like it’ll be a good while before we find out for sure though, so we'll just have to keep waiting for now.
