This year’s Call of Duty release is going to be hard to beat. In just 10 days, Modern Warfare II has earnt a whopping $1 billion in revenue, with over one billion matches joined. It’s officially now the most successful Call of Duty launch of all-time - a vast improvement on last year’s underwhelming Vanguard.
Modern Warfare II excels in all areas. Fans are loving the “incredible” campaign and the new anti-camping tool fixes one of multiplayer’s most frustrating issues. There’s even more on the way, as season one launches on 16 November - plus that day will see the return of a classic fan-favourite map. You may be wondering where the series might be heading when it comes to the 2023 CoD release. Well, expect more Modern Warfare II.

Call of Duty fans are used to receiving a brand new game every single year, but things are going to look a little different in 2023. It’s been rumoured for quite some time that 2023’s CoD release will instead be replaced by an expansion to Modern Warfare II. It’s believed that the expansion will contain new DLC maps and a single-player campaign that follows on from the existing campaign.

Yesterday, reports claimed that this single-player campaign would remake the controversial ‘No Russian’ mission. Well, it’s now been unveiled that this ‘expansion’ will actually be equal in size to a full release. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier explained that the “paid” Modern Warfare II expansion would be a “premium” product. He wrote, “It’s supposed to have lots of content. Maybe that’s why they call it a ‘full’ release, but it’s more MWII.”
Schreier was referring to a financial release (shared via CharlieIntel) that referred to “the next full premium release in the blockbuster series.” The next mainline game will then come from Treyarch in 2024 and if rumours are to be believed, it could be a new Black Ops title. Many are suggesting that two-year cycles for CoD games are here to stay. Time will tell.
