Modern Warfare 2 sails past $1 billion in revenue faster than any COD title

From the very first reveal, Modern Warfare II showed so much more promise than last year’s Vanguard. Bringing back fan-favourites like Ghost and Price was a clever move. Fans’ praise of the “incredible” campaign during the early access period confirmed what many of us assumed to be true. Modern Warfare II is a return to form for Call of Duty.

It’s no surprise then that it’s now Activision’s most successful Call of Duty launch ever. MWII doesn’t just bank on franchise nostalgia. The new maps and anti-camping tool have gone down very well indeed. Activision aren’t being shy about the game’s success. In fact, they’ve just revealed that MWII has sailed past the $1 billion revenue mark.

MWII has surpassed $1 billion in global sell-through revenue in just 10 days, making it the fastest Call of Duty game to ever do so. The previous record was held by Black Ops II which earned $1 billion in 15 days back in 2012. It doesn’t quite match the all-time gaming record though. Grand Theft Auto V reached the $1 billion mark in just three days.

That’s not the only achievement Activision announced. MWII has also already logged more than 200 million hours of game time - with players joining more than one billion matches. It’s been noted that MWII is now the highest grossing entertainment opening of 2022, beating film releases like Top Gun: Maverick and Thor: Love and Thunder.
