Mortal Kombat 2 has found the perfect Johnny Cage

The Boys star Karl Urban could soon be taking on yet another huge role, as it’s reported that he could be starring in Mortal Kombat 2 as fan-favourite character Johnny Cage.

The sequel to 2021’s Mortal Kombat reboot movie (simply titled Mortal Kombat) will once again be directed by Simon McQuoid, although the plot has this time been written by Jeremy Slater - the same guy who created the excellent Disney+ Marvel series Moon Knight, and developed The Umbrella Academy on Netflix. All in all, even though we know very little about the follow-up’s plot, it’s shaping up to be pretty promising based on that alone.

Now though, things just got way more interesting. The Wrap reports that Karl Urban is in “final talks” to play Johnny Cage, which suggests that it’s fairly likely he’ll end up joining the film. At the end of Mortal Kombat (2021), there was a brief teaser which basically confirmed that the character will be in the next film - a Johnny Cage poster was shown, although the camera angle cleverly avoided revealing his face. As such, it could have been anyone, but there’s no doubt that Urban would be a popular choice.

The New Zealand actor has bagged plenty of big gigs in the past, including Leonard McCoy in the Star Trek reboot series and Skurge in Thor: Ragnarok. With that said, many will know him best as The Boys’ Billy Butcher. The fourth season of Amazon Prime’s superhero series recently finished filming, and both the cast and crew have teased some seriously wild stuff that fans can look forward to seeing soon.

Back to Mortal Kombat 2 though, and at the time of writing, we don’t know when it’ll be releasing in cinemas. Hell, we’ve not even seen a trailer yet. If casting talks are still in motion, it suggests that it could be some time before any of that happens, so sit tight for now.
