Netflix apparently wants a MCU style The Lord Of The Rings universe

Netflix apparently wants a MCU style The Lord Of The Rings universe

According to a report, Netflix pitched multiple Lord of the Rings shows to the Tolkien Estate, including a Gandalf series and Aragorn drama.

We’re now most of the way though Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series, The Rings of Power - how are we all feeling? Given the timing of it releasing almost alongside the Game of Thrones spinoff series, House of the Dragon, it’s felt a bit like the two have been in competition, but both certainly have their fans. Even the show’s intro is hiding some really neat Tolkien lore, which you might have missed.

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter though, The Rings of Power wasn’t the only LOTR show which was pitched to the Tolkien Estate. Reportedly, sources claim that HBO had pitched a retelling of the Third Age (already covered by the original Peter Jackson movie trilogy), but the estate wasn’t interested in doing the same thing again. Perhaps PlayStation could take some notes there.

Meanwhile, Netflix reportedly pitched multiple shows, including an Aragorn drama and even a Gandalf series. “They took the Marvel approach,” one insider claimed (via The Hollywood Reporter). “And that completely freaked out the estate.”

So, it sounds like that’s probably not going to happen anytime soon, but it sure is an interesting concept. The plethora of Netflix and Disney+ shows set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have brought some awesome characters like Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel to screen, not to mention all the characters who already featured in the MCU, who’ve been given more time to shine. All things considered, if the shows Netflix pitched were handled well, they probably would have gone down pretty great with fans, but alas, some things just aren’t meant to be.

Anyway, the next episode of The Rings of Power will be available to stream tomorrow (7 October), so there’s not long at all to wait for that.
