Netflix drops Squid Game season 2's first trailer

It feels like mere months ago that Squid Game took the world by storm, but it was actually back in September 2021 that the series debuted on Netflix. I still recall being intrigued by the clip that greeted me everytime I loaded up the streaming service - the contestants, all clad in matching tracksuits, silently moving in line on those brightly coloured staircases. It wasn’t long before everyone dived in to see what all the fuss was about.

If you don’t know, Squid Game revolves around a secret contest where players are offered the chance to compete for a cash prize worth around 45.6 billion won. The only issue is, the stakes are a lot higher than originally perceived. The contestants may be competing in childish playground games in their attempts to win the cash prize, but the price of losing is death. What unfolds is a twisting and thrilling commentary on capitalism and class disparity. The series became Netflix’s most-watched series in its first four weeks and a second season was commissioned. A teaser has now been released for that second season.

Unfortunately, the trailer only focuses on the cast but hey, it’s an update. We’ll take it. The teaser introduces several newcomers to the cast. As reported by GamesRadar, they are Yim Si-Wan, Kang Ha-Neul, Park Sung-Hoon, and Yang Dong-Geun. We don’t yet know who they’re all playing but we do see them pressing a green button, indicating that they’re ready to play. Oh lawd, here we go again.

The trailer also confirmed that Lee Byung-Han (The Front Man), Lee Jung-Jae (Seong Gi-Hun), Wi Ha-Jun (Hwang Jun-Ho), and Gong Yoo (Recruiter) are also back. Seeing as season one saw the demise of many fan-favourite characters, there are plenty of cast members who won’t be returning.

So, what do we know about season two’s story? Seong Gi-Hun will presumably still have his random red haircut as seen at the end of season one, and we know he’s keen to take down those behind the games. It stands to reason that perhaps some of the new cast members could be participants in the next edition of the contest. Filming is set to begin this summer so we may not see the series on our screens until mid 2024 at the earliest.
