Netflix cancelled fan-favourite show saved following six-month campaign

Netflix may be immensely commercially popular but in recent months, it’s certainly fallen out of favour with many due to a number of controversial decisions.

The major headline of 2023 for the streaming service has arguably been the crackdown on password sharing. It’s no longer something you can do on Netflix. Essentially, you now have to pay an extra fee if you don’t live at the account holder’s address. In Canada, Netflix is in the midst of also trialling removing the basic ad-free tier which means customers either need to go for the cheaper ad option, or the pricier ad-free upgrade. Add on top of that a wide array of cancellations and you can see why subscribers aren’t thrilled. I do have some good news though. After a long six-month campaign, one cancelled fan-favourite show has been saved. It’s official: Warrior Nun is returning.

One Piece is aiming to be the next big Netflix hit.

Even if you’re yet to watch Warrior Nun, I’d imagine you’ll have seen #SaveWarriorNun trending on Twitter. It’s practically trending everyday. The series follows an orphaned teen who, after discovering she has supernatural powers, joins a secret sect of demon-hunting nuns. The show was cancelled after just two seasons which started off a major wave of fan protests. Many said it was a continuation of the ‘trend’ to cancel female-led shows that advocated for queer representation.

A petition on change.org garnered over 120,000 signatures and fans relentlessly continued to voice their hopes of another season to Netflix. Many fanbases have attempted such efforts but Warrior Nun fans have done so with great success as this morning, showrunner Simon Barry confirmed that Warrior Nun is officially returning.

He took to Twitter to say, “Today I’m happy to officially report that because of your combined voices, passion and amazing efforts - #WarriorNun will return and is going to be more EPIC than you could imagine. More details to come! SOON! Thank-you.” It’s not immediately clear if it’ll remain on Netflix or whether another streaming service has stepped in. Either way, this is great news.
