Netflix's new religious horror is so scary people can't finish it

It seems that Netflix has a horror hit on its hands that is apparently scaring viewers so much, some can’t even finish it.

The movie in question is the religiously themed and very befittingly named Eerie. Making its debut at the 2018 Singapore International Film Festival, before making its way to Philippine cinemas, this movie made a respectable three million at the box office. However, it is also now available to stream on Netflix.

“A guidance counsellor's special talents help her unravel the mystery behind the unexpected and gruesome death of a student at a Catholic school for girls,” reads the Eerie synopsis. “After watching The Nun and being disappointed, I am looking forward to Eerie on Netflix. All I heard was that you will never want to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night,” said Dr. Stephanie L. Young on Twitter.

“It's more than just the jump scares, it tackles more of the deeper side of relevant issues - depression, suicide, bullying, family problems & the innate evil of every character,” tweeted @joshu_desu. “I love the story, the characters & how it leaves the audience with life lessons. A must-see.”

“Nine out of ten,” exclaimed @tellemjayps. “Loved the fact that it depicts relevant issues - depression, suicide, family problems, and religious precept.” That all being said, full reviews aren't so kind. On IMDb, Eerie has a below-average score of 4.7 and it fairs even worse on Rotten Tomatoes with a score of just 22%.

Perhaps more so than any other movie genre, horror is especially subjective. What I might find absolutely terrifying, could be comedy gold to another and vice versa. So either way, if you go into Eerie with an open mind, you might discover a highly enjoyable horror flick.
