Netflix saves doomed series in last-minute deal

Netflix saves doomed series in last-minute deal

Sometimes Netflix does good things

Netflix has just saved one of its oldest shows in a last-minute U-turn that will see the fan-favourite series remain on the streaming service for the foreseeable future.

Back in October it emerged that Netflix would be getting rid of its oldest original series as the deal to continue hosting it had expired.

While not technically a Netflix original in the same vein as Stranger Things or Dead To Me, the crime drama Lilyhammer was nonetheless billed as such because the streaming giant purchased the rights to it.

Lilyhammer, which stars The Sopranos alum Steven Van Zandt, follows the exploits of a former New York gangster (Van Zandt) as he attempts to start a new life in a small, isolated Norwegian town. Despite originally premiering on the Norwegian NRK1, the show came to Netflix in 2012 and was marketed as a Netflix original.

Lilyhammer ran for three seasons, drawing to a close in 2014. Since then, it’s remained available to watch on the streaming service, although it emerged last month that Netflix's rights to stream the show were set to end on November 20.

The eagle-eyed readers out there will have noted at this point that November 20 has been and gone, yet Lilyhammer remains on Netflix. That's because, as reported by IndieWire, Netflix has finished up a last-minute deal to keep the show and all 24 episodes available to subscribers.

"I am very proud of 'Lilyhammer' being not just the first original show on Netflix, but the first truly international show, with subtitles and a completely Norwegian cast and crew except for me, helping establish Netflix as the first truly international entertainment company," Van Zandt said in a statement announcing the news.

See? Netflix doesn't just cancel everything it sees. Sometimes it saves shows too.
