A new Battlefield has been announced by EA and it will seemingly be a huge departure for the series.

Despite being one of the most popular and long-running modern video game franchises, it’s been quite a turbulent couple of years for Battlefield.

Battlefield 1942 was the first game in the series to release for PC way back in 2002. Over the years that followed, Battlefield has gone toe-to-toe with Activision’s Call of Duty in the war to be the best military FPS on the planet.

Some could argue that the series hasn't been at its peak since the fantastic Bad Company entries in 2008 and 2010, respectively. However, the series arguably hit its lowest with the arrival of Battlefield 2042 released in 2021.

Even before its launch, Battlefield 2042 faced an uphill battle with the exclusion of a single player campaign, so for all intent and purposes, this multiplayer-only entry had to hit the ground running. Sadly, Battlefield 2042 launched with a lack of modes, and features as well as a plethora of bugs, glitches and server issues.

Granted, from what we hear, Battlefield 2042 is in a better place, but when players get burned, it can often be practically impossible to entice them to ever return again. Yet loyal fans will patiently wait for this series to rise from the ashes with its next attempt at competing with Call of Duty.

So what’s next for this series? Well, I think the new Battlefield product might catch us a little off guard. As reported by GameSpot (via GamesRadar), Electronic Arts CEO, Andrew Wilson said in the company’s latest investor report that he takes “ownership” of Battlefield 2042s shortcomings, but maintained that the “ability to bring Battlefield back in an entirely new way in the future.” However, Wilson didn't specify how the series will be brought back.

What’s more, during a Q&A session, when talking about a new Battlefield leadership team, the EA CEO stated that he has “extraordinary confidence in that team and extraordinary confidence in the progress they're making against the future of that franchise.”

Wilson added that the Battlefield series is “firmly implanted,” in EA’s strategy, and the company is: “building games and experiences that attract and entertain massive online communities across platforms, across business models, across geographies. And we think that Battlefield is going to be a meaningful part of our future. And we'll share more time and share more as time progresses.”

Hopefully, Electronic Arts will reveal all in the coming months and whether or not Battlefield is a huge departure from the series, it will once again go toe-to-toe with Call of Duty.
