The next Total War game has been announced, Total War: Pharaoh, and it’s taking the series back to its roots of real and recorded human history.
Recent entries into the Total War series have delved into a range of supernatural worlds and characters, from human mythology like the Greek Gods, heroes and monsters, to its latest adventures in the Warhammer series. Total War: Pharoah will be having none of that though, and aims to plant the game firmly in the real world, no fantasy allowed.
Featuring a range of Egyptian, Canaanite and Hittite leaders to choose from, such as Ramesses, Seti, Bay, Irsu, Kurunta and Suppiluliuma, players will be attempting to take over the vast land of Ancient Egypt, during the unstable era of the Bronze Age Collapse. Think Assassin’s Creed Origins, but bigger, and fewer assassins.
Players will need to think carefully and strategise their moves, as they attempt to build up their army and civilisation, whilst defending against hostile factions, controlled by AI or other players. Climactic battles will take place to decide who gets to capture areas of land, and only the most tactical players will prevail.

New features are also being introduced to make the game more dynamic, such as weather systems, that could turn the tide of the game, especially if your civilisation falls victim to a devastating fire, or your troops get caught in a hectic sandstorm. It’s a nice addition, and gives the player more to think about when planning and executing their strategy, especially considering time and elements may not be on your side when you need them the most.
It’ll be good fun, and it’s nice to see the series returning to its original setting, even though the supernatural and chaotic elements were fun in their own way.
Total War: Pharaoh will arrive later this year in October, and will be available on PC via Steam, as well as the Epic Games Store, with pre-orders currently available.
