If you know many people that own a Switch, chances are you've had to listen to them talking about the price of turnips for the last month or more. And if that's the case, it's probably not going to be much of a surprise to learn that Animal Crossing: New Horizons has sold more than 13.4 million copies since launch, according to a report from Gamesindustry.biz.

New Horizons had managed to shift more than 11 million units by March 31st this year, which is pretty staggering when you realise that the game launched on March 20th. Essentially, it managed to hit over 13.4 million within the first six weeks of release, making it the fastest-selling Animal Crossing game on any platform and the fastest-selling Switch game ever.

The previous franchise record-holder was New Leaf on the 3DS, sitting at 12.55 million over the last six years of sales. New Horizons has managed to smash that record within six weeks.

It's likely not a coincidence that Nintendo has also released their figures for Switch console sales, boasting a staggering 55.7 million units sold since launch. That figure means the Switch has outsold the Nintendo 64 and Gamecube combined and is well on track for selling even more than the original NES.

A recent update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons has added museums - amongst other things - which fans of the franchise will be familiar with.

"After downloading the free update, Jolly Redd will occasionally show up in his boat to sell in-game art, as well as furniture with unique colors," Nintendo explained. "Like in previous Animal Crossing games, players will have to figure out which art pieces are real and which are fake. After purchasing genuine art, players can donate it to the island museum to open an art gallery, which will display all types of donated pieces, from paintings to sculptures."

Whether it's your sort of game or not, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has certainly done well for Nintendo. It was a popular franchise to begin with but coupled with the recent global situation, it's not hard to see why so many people have turned to it in order to escape everyday life.

It's certainly been popular among the staff here at GAMINGbible, as is evident from the team's favourite video games of 2020 so far. And it seems that even celebrities aren't immune to its charm either. The Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood visited another player's island to collect some fruit and was apparently incredibly polite the whole time. Aww.
