Gamer Replacing Controller Rumble With Industrial Motor Turns To Utter Chaos

You can definitely have too much of a good thing

Controller rumble feels pretty essential when I'm playing console games now. Without it, I don't think I'd be half as good at telling when an enemy is shooting me from and now with the DualSense controller, there is a whole other level of information that can be passed into my hands through controller convulsions. But what if you wanted more. More rumble, more information, right?

Wrong. This creation from Teenenggr shows exactly why more rumble would never make you any better at your games. Sometimes you really can have too much of a good thing. This video showing the modder replacing the rumble motor in a controller for an industrial motor is just chaos distilled into a clip.

Once coded to respond to in-game actions these huge motors can make guns in games feel just a little bit more realistic, and inconvenient simultaneously. After studying how controllers use motors, Teenenggr added the same feature to their desk as they played shooters on PC. The monitor literally needs to be duct-taped to the desk to keep it standing while the character shoots.

Another variation adds several smaller motors to the sides of a mouse, which somehow seems more sensible. The rumble or the earthquakes is perhaps more accurate, are less violent and actually sort of seems like a good idea for an immersive experience. I wonder if anyone would actually buy a mouse that gave you feedback like this?

And the modder's coding ability doesn't just apply to gun immersion either. Teenenggr has spent time coding a fake typewriting set up for his keyboard and computer too. What's the point of that? Who knows, but it's pretty neat and makes a pretty satisfying sound at least.

Wacky creations, the lot of them. But maybe Sony after the success of the DualSense will be looking out to make a controller that can eventually get you even closer to the action you're experiencing on screen. Sony, get in touch with Teenenggr, they seem to know exactly what they're doing.
