Baldur's Gate 3, the gorgeous fantasy role-playing video game from Larian Studios that builds off of Dungeons & Dragons, won't be completed by the end of this year.

Oh. Well. That's fine. Do what you have to do, in my opinion. Studio founder Swen Vincke broke the news in an interview with GameSpot where he covered the trajectory of the extremely popular game since its release into early access in October 2020. "We are really trying to get the game done by next year," he said. "It's not gonna release this year for sure." It's possible that the team have been grappling with the impact of the pandemic on their schedules, as studios across the globe shifted to remote working and prioritised their employees' health and safety as the coronavirus spread. Other games that have been affected by these unavoidable changes are Deathloop, Halo Infinite, Rainbow Six Extraction, and the next God Of War game. Yet, as we know, delays aren't to be met with huffs and sighs of discontentment. We've grown up and found out that good things come to those who wait and giving a developer even more time to polish those finishing touches makes for a better game overall.

One game that really, really, really would have benefitted from one more delay is Cyberpunk 2077, which was a shambles when it launched in December 2020. Check out our analysis of the game's performance on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox One X and PC. Spoilers: it ain't pretty.

Vincke was able to share what Larian Studios has been working on regarding the eventual release of Baldur's Gate 3, and it's taken the feedback of early access into consideration. The next update that is on its way to early access players won't be reinventing the wheel, by the way. Instead, it will pay attention to honing those positively received elements before adding new things into the mix. "It's an update that focuses on a lot of the feedback that we've been getting," explained Vincke. "It's more focused on features than it is on new content."

Furthermore, if you're feeling a little restricted in your gallivanting about as a melee warrior... that's the point. "[In] D&D, the fighter class is the tutorial class. At the tabletop it is used to teach you how to play, but as a result it gives you limited things at the get-go to work with," continued Vincke. And, Baldur's Gate 3 might get a Game Master mode, but it would be a long way down the team's list of priorities. "We are so focused on making the game itself, and it's such a beast to develop," concluded the studio founder.

Baldur's Gate 3 is available for PC right now, with a full release expected some time in 2022.
