Grand Theft Auto VI promises to be a technical marvel in terms of scope and game design. Releasing sometime in 2025 for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and potentially PC, it’s setting itself up to be one of the biggest games of the decade.

Speaking of decades, Grand Theft Auto V recently turned 10 years old, celebrating its monumental milestone yesterday with some freebies for all GTA Online players.

While most celebrated, others wept, as many came to the sudden realisation that Grand Theft Auto V has been the only new GTA game for the last 10 years. While Rockstar Games followed it up with Red Dead Redemption 2 a few years later, it was a very different series, with an almost separate fanbase.

Fans compared the last few years with the release dates of past GTA games, all of which had greatly shorter gaps between the releases.

Reddit user pontifexrus shared this fact in a post titled: “10 years with GTA V.” Most were understanding of the longer wait times though, as games are only getting bigger and more advanced every year, and with Grand Theft Auto VI potentially including several other areas outside of Vice City in its open world, it makes sense why development has taken so long.

“This may sound like an unpopular opinion, but I like how they focus on other games like RDR2 that took five or eight years to make. And I’m happy that they're taking their sweet time with GTA 6," said one user.

“A lot of people here pretending GTA Online doesn’t exist and didn’t affect the speed of making/releasing new games. Yeah, it’s totally normal for a game company with the most profitable game of all time to release only two games in the last decade. Nothing unusual there," added another.

“[GTA] III, Vice, and SA all shared the same engine. LCS and VCS were reworks of existing maps. [GTA] IV, TLAD and TBOGT all shared the same map as well. Its not like these were all fresh new games," read one comment.

We still haven’t seen official gameplay from Grand Theft Auto VI. Many expected a reveal during GTA V’s 10th anniversary which didn’t happen, so it looks like The Game Awards are our best bet to catch an official glimpse of the game in action.
