Nintendo Switch 2 as powerful as PS5, Xbox Series X, insiders say

Nintendo reportedly gave game developers an exclusive first look at the Nintendo Switch 2 during Gamescom, and it’s apparently a beast.

While Xbox and PlayStation have relentlessly competed for the most powerful video game console over the years, Nintendo has often made it clear that they have no intention of joining the competition, instead focusing on their iconic library of exclusive titles.

However, it seems like Nintendo is finally ready to throw its hat into the ring, with a potential direct competitor for the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.

According to sources from Eurogamer, Nintendo hosted a private show for game developers during Gamescom, where they could see a tech demo for their upcoming next-gen console. While its actual name is unknown, many are calling it the Nintendo Switch 2, and it’s rumoured to launch sometime in 2024.

As for the demo itself, it’s believed it involved Epic Games’The Matrix Awakens Unreal Engine 5 tech demo, which suggests a dramatic leap in power compared to what came before. It’s also stated that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was also shown running on the console, at a much higher framerate and resolution.

The device also used Nvidia’s DLSS upscaling technology and also boasted ray tracing and graphical fidelity not unlike the latest Xbox and PlayStation consoles.

That being said, it’s unlikely the Nintendo Switch 2 will match the power output of the Xbox Series X and PS5, or exceed it. If this was the case, the price of the system would have to be much more expensive than the Nintendo Switch, or Nintendo Switch OLED, which would be a surprising decision from Nintendo given its core demographic.

It’s also worth noting that these are unconfirmed reports, so until there’s an official confirmation or reveal from Nintendo, take the rumours with a pinch of salt.
