Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 'mathematically proven' to be greatest game of all time

What would you say is the greatest game of all time? It’s an absolutely enormous question which goes well beyond what your favourite game is - you’ve got to consider absolutely everything from a title’s innovation, polish, impact and overall fun factor.

So, how does one take all that into account while also removing their personal biases? With the power of maths, apparently. One gamer has mathematically calculated the top 500 games of all time, and it’s a pretty interesting list.

So, how does one use maths to determine the greatest games ever? According to list creator RuFiOoo, who shared their findings via an IGN Playlist: “80 historical ‘Best of All Time’ lists published over the last 30 years were compiled and assessed; individual rankings were scored based on a curve with bonus points for higher tiers; appearance frequency, list eligibility, and minimum data thresholds were factored in.” Sounds pretty thorough.

Anyway, as I’m sure you’ll have noticed from the headline, the game sat at the very top of the list is none other than The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Link’s 2017 adventure was absolutely groundbreaking for the Zelda series - none before it offered the same level of freedom and exploration, and it never gets old. Even though I’d argue that its sequel, Tears of the Kingdom, has since bettered it, you’ve got to hand it to Breath of the Wild for doing it first, and for making such an exceptional launch title for the Nintendo Switch.

For obvious reasons, I’m not going to list the rest of the top 500 here, but other highlights include Tetris at number two, The Last of Us at number three, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time at number four. I’d also like to point out that Xenoblade Chronicles being all the way down in 188th place is an absolute crime, but I’ll let it slide.

Even if Breath of the Wild isn’t your favourite, you can’t argue with maths.
