Epic Games Store gives away $10,000 worth of free games

The Epic Games Store has given away around $10,000 worth of free games over the past few years, some of which are playable right now.

The Epic Games Store has given away a new free game every week for quite some time and according to new research, when you add up how much each game would cost at full-price, you start to realise just how generous the online store has been.

Last night we got a closer look at Death Stranding 2, the next mind-boggling adventure from Hideo Kojima.

Since 2018, the platform has given away just short of 400 games, and when you add up their average prices you reach a grand total of over $10,000 in value. While they do swap around fairly regularly, there’s always something new to look at it, including some freebies you can download and play right now if you know where to look.

These haven’t all been minor indie games either, some real heavy-hitters have been offered as freebies like Grand Theft Auto V and Death Stranding. While many free games will be hit or miss for certain players, you can’t deny Epic has been very generous.

Epic isn’t the only one either, Cyberpunk 2077’s publisher CD Projekt Red occasionally gives a game away via GOG, and who can forget Steam’s never-ending supply of freebies, though the majority of those do tend to be small indie games rather than AAA releases.

It doesn’t seem like Epic Games plans to slow down anytime soon, and we can likely expect plenty more free games on the horizon in 2024, including ones offered through GOG and Steam.

With any luck 2024 will bring even more freebies to our game libraries, and hopefully some AAA ones tied to some of this year’s upcoming releases, like Silent Hill 2 and the Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater remake.
