The PlayStation 5 is vastly outselling Xbox Series X/S, makes Xbox’s third-party plans understandable

Console wars might be a really silly subject, but there’s no denying that if you were to compare the two, PlayStation is in a far better place than Xbox is right now.

Both consoles have their merits. Xbox Game Pass continues to be a huge success on the Xbox Series X/S, with rumours that it’ll soon be made available on other platforms with a new name, Microsoft Game Pass. However PlayStation has a better line-up of exclusive games, like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, The Last Of Us Part 2, and even the newly released Helldivers 2 which is now the most-played PlayStation game on Steam.

While you could draw comparisons between both consoles and what they do right/wrong all day long, the latest stats from Rockstar Games’ parent company Take-Two Interactive show the PlayStation 5 is running circles around the Xbox Series X/S in sales.

According to the company’s latest earnings report, 77 million new-gen consoles were sold in 2023. Sony confessed late last year that over 50 million PS5 consoles were sold, which would imply Microsoft only sold around 27 million Xbox Series X/S consoles.

You should take those stats with a grain of salt as Microsoft rarely discloses its hardware sales, but if it’s true it’d make Xbox’s planned pivot to third-party gaming much more understandable.

It’s believed the head of Xbox Phil Spencer will announce plans to port a variety of Xbox-exclusive games to other platforms, like the PlayStation 5, and there’s even a rumour going around a multiplatform Halo game is currently in development too.

Again, take this information with a grain of salt, but it’s shaping up to be a very big week for Xbox with its next decisions potentially determining the fate of the entire brand.
